THE ESSENTIAL
German Bauhaus celebrates this year its anniversary "100 years of Bauhaus". What started as an art school in Weimar became a movement which transferred its principles into applied architecture, arts and hand craft. Until today the buildings are unique and remarkable in their styles. The school was also present in Berlin and Dessau.
Public news, TV & radio station rbb provided an overview map of renowned Bauhaus architecture examples in and around Berlin. Travelers can find Bauhaus architecture in a lot of states of Germany (page). The Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin is currently being renovated in accordance with historic monument requirements during the next few years. For this reason a temporary archive is opened. Anniversary website of Bauhaus: https://www.bauhaus100.com Info about anniversary on website of Berlin.

On November 18 the new exhbition "PERGAMON. Masterpieces from the Ancient Metropolis with a 360° Panorama by Yadegar Asisi" opened for the first time. The too long name is often replaced by the acronym "Pergamon360". Most interesting is the mix of real ancient pieces such as statues with modern multimedia techniques and formats. "The panorama takes visitors back to the year AD 129, showing the ancient city of Pergamon on the west coast of Asia Minor. Yadegar Asisi reconstructs the city as it was during the time of the High Roman Empire under the rule of the Emperor Hadrian (AD 117–138). Embedded in the terraces of the Acropolis atop the city’s 300-metre-high hill, monumental buildings, among them several temples and a massive theatre, blend into the landscape of hilly peaks." (original statement from website of exhibition). More details you will find on the following websites:
November 9 is a remarkable date in German history with three big events in different younger epochs. And they all happened in Berlin. A good chance to walk through three epochs of history on that symbolic day:
Have a great day at historic memorials in Berlin or start a good read.
Status Aug. 29: The division of Berlin already restarted before the project was building the wall. This time the division is not East and West, it is pro and con the idea of DAU film project to rebuild the wall in the center of Berlin at a different place as an add-on to this wide-ranging project. It is still unclear whether Berlin adminstration will give a go for that. But the main target to achieve awareness for the project is already achieved.
An arcticle from DW.com goes into details. Personal opinion: This funny-bunny filmmaker seems to have no idea what the real wall was. It was not only a wall, it was a landscape stripe of death from a regime which gave the order to shoot the own people reaching for personal freedom. The exhibition "ninetiesBerlin" shows a very illustrative room listing the names of the shot people and showing dozens of machine guns. See review here. In German "DAU" is an abbreviation for "Dümmster anzunehmender User" (most silly user). Update Sept 28: The district administration decided against the project - even in a smaller version. Reason: The evaluation time for all security matters was too short because the project was planned close to several security relevant institutions. The new Berlin Palace is currently built at the same place on which socialist Palace of Republic and before the historic Berlin Palace were standing. The new palace is in construction since 2013. On Aug 25 & 26 2018 the construction site was opened for public. Here are some pictures of my visit on the second day: Personal impressions from that day:
I ask myself if it was a good decision to partly rebuild an old approach. That way the building had not an authentic on character to me. May be the concept how to do an interpretation of a palace in 21st century would have been the better approach. Even modern hotels impress more than this palace. Deep inside I hope that the building which is just "standing" there gets finally the necessary equipment to be outstanding - to be a real palace. Finally I recommend to visit new Berlin Palace - not only for the classic fascade elements - but also to get an own impression and opinion of this building. Global Cold War was also carried out into architecture style and prestige projects in eastern and western part of Berlin.
And so much more typical buildings fom this era:
On city planning level in the outer districts Berlin still has three examples of how to store as much people in new buildings as possible. Here East and West were doing the same mistakes which were done gloablly at this time:
Interesting add-on is to look at - luxury houses. Here you can likely see the biggest contrast:
Tip: German public TV ZDF produced a documentary about the "War of Buildings" (German language only, likely protected by geofencing). And there are so much more details ... Welcome2Berlin.
What a wonderful short TV moment provided by rbb - a timestamp from Berlin in the 90s when Reichstag building was wrapped by Christo und Jeanne-Claude. I was also there at some evenings and smiled today the full two minutes viewing that flashback.
I just visited the new multimedia exhibition "ninetiesBerlin" close to Alexanderplatz. In four large spaces visitors can experience several installations:
The exhibition is worth a visit for people who ...
My personal impression: I really liked my visit but as someone who lived in Berlin in the 90's and who experienced the reunification and the days, months and years after that I missed a lot of things that were important for people in Berlin and Germany. More than Techno the 90's were a challenge of change that was never done before on the planet. Photos from the exhibition: Tip: Book tickets online to save 10% and take some time. Welcome2Berlin.
